VACATION HOT SPOTS
KENTUCKY DERBY
Louisville, KY
In Kentucky the first weekend in May means Derby time and Mint Julep’s. This horse racing event annually brings together over a hundred thousand spectators all though many of them will never see a horse race. Why is this? Its because there are two ways to enjoy the Kentucky Derby. The first, is by way of the grand stand. In the grand stand, the dress is fancy and the horses are the main attraction. It’s a place to see and be seen, as many of Hollywood’s elite attend this historic event. The second way to enjoy the Kentucky Derby is by way of the infamous infield. The infield is a Bourbon powered party where the young women traditionally bare their breasts and become the main attraction. This party kicks off early in the morning and lasts to the tail end of the twelve race.
Captain’s Tip: Try this recipe for the Poor Man’s Mint Julep. Chew a stick of spearmint gum and follow it with 2 ounces of your favorite Kentucky Bourbon. It’s good to the last drop!

The Old Shillelagh
Detroit, Michigan
In the heart of Detroit’s Greek Town lies the Old Shillelagh, an Irish bar located one block from the Greek Town Casino. The first level of the Old Shillelagh is a traditional bar with dark lighting, limited seating, popular music, and a few pool tables. The second story is the dictionary definition of a “dive” with a rugged, run down, aged interior with a distinct smell of sweat and beer from the previous night’s show. After climbing a steep flight of stairs, you are tightly seated at plain ordinary picnic tables. You may find yourself asking…What the hell am I doing here? Or…Is this place safe? These fears and apprehensions are quickly washed away by a bowl of salty popcorn and your first pitcher of beer.
Every Friday and Saturday night Black Mist, a three man Irish band packs the upstairs of the Old Shillelagh with a couple hundred thirsty fans. From a small corner stage Black Mist energizes the crowd with witty humor and traditional Irish sing along songs like Black Velvet Band, Give The Women In The Bed More Porter, and Unicorn. Singing with delight, the jovial crowd claps their hands and sways from side to side with the music. Black Mist’s front man Billy Dixon, asks the crowd “Do we have any beer drinkers in the house tonight?”. The crowd quickly responds with cheers of joy. The Guinness drinkers raise their glass mugs into the air and Black Mist plays the next drinking song, Drunken Sailor. You can also expect to hear crowd pleasing cover songs like Piano Man, Volcano, Southern Cross, Brown Eyed Girl, and Sweet Caroline. Seating upstairs begins around 9PM and admission is $4.00. Arrive early to purchase tickets as the seating is limited.
