KAUAI THE GARDEN ISLE
Napali CoastA great friend whose father was born and raised in Kauai initially introduced us to this magical and spiritual paradise. The island of Kauai is truly a natural wonder and amazingly most of its sites can be viewed at roadside or by a short walk.

Poipu is located on the South shore of Kauai and is by far the sunniest spot on the island. Poipu Beach is great for children of all ages and caters to families because of its easy access, public parking, lifeguards, wave break, pavilions, and showers. Poipu beach is also great for snorkeling, surfing, and kayaking. If you’re lucky, you may see an endangered monk seal resting beachside. Be sure not to touch these endangered creature as it may cost you a lofty fine of $25,000 and lead to a criminal conviction. Don’t forget to visit Poipu’s most famous blow hole the Spouting Horn.

Captain’s Tip : In Kauai you can get “lei’d” for as little as $5 at many of the roadside stands.

Hanakapiai BeachTraveling North from Poipu, you’ll come to the Coconut Coast. Here as you look inland you’ll see the profile of a Sleeping Giant and King Kong on the mountainous countryside. On the Wailua River kayaking to Secret Falls is a popular event. Here you kayak two miles upstream and then hike and easy two miles to the picturesque Secret Falls. Caution the headwind on the kayak back can be hell. The Kilauea Lighthouse is an easily accessible view. This lighthouse is perched cliff side next to a natural bird sanctuary. Secret Beach is a extraordinarily long stretch of sand, not far from the Kilauea Lighthouse. What’s the secret? If you travel off the beaten path to find this stunning secluded beach, you’ll find out! Secret Beach hosts a diverse crowd including surfers, locals, tourists, nudists, and the hippie culture. Drive north on Highway 56 past Mile Marker 23. Turn right on Kalihiwai Road. Then make a quick right turn on Kahiliwai Road. Follow this short dirt road until it dead ends. Park your ride, grab your beach bag and towel, and proceed to the right of the fenced in horse pasture. A beaten path runs alongside the pasture and then descends down a steep, slippery trail to the awe-inspiring Secret Beach.

Hanalei KauaiThe North shore of Kauai is the wettest place on Planet Earth with an average of over 440 inches of rainfall annually. This abundant rain supply gives life to this lush mountainous paradise. While driving north on Highway 56 you’ll come to the famous Hanalei Bay, who’s timeless beauty gave inspiration to the Peter, Paul, and Mary song Puff The Magic Dragon. The North Shore leads to mysterious wet and dry caves. At the end of the road on Tunnels BeachHighway 56 you will run into Tunnels Beach and Kee Beach. Both are great for rest and relaxation, but are also spectacular for snorkeling and diving. If R&R is not your style, then set out for a strenuous and challenging hike along the Napali Coast on the Kalalau Trail. Hanakapiai Beach is a three mile roundtrip hike and is the first stop on the trail. Expect to encounter steep rock-covered hills with spectacular cliff side views of the ocean. For those who are up for the challenge once you reach Hanakapiai Beach, you can turn inland and travel an additional three miles round trip the breathtaking 200 foot Hanakapiai Waterfall which is surrounded by a mountainous amphitheater. Please take caution, intense rainfall can make this trail deadly and many lives have been lost while swimming in the currents of Hanakapiai Beach. Play it smart!

WHERE TO STAY
There are vacation resorts throughout the island of Kauai. For budget travel, we strongly suggest staying at a privately owned bed and breakfast for individual and personal attention. Many of Kauai’s bed and breakfast’s are priced under $100 per night and provide gourmet breakfast, beach towels, boogie boards, snorkeling equipment, videos, books, kitchenettes, and laundry facilities. A good Kauai bed and breakfast host offers their guests insider tips on local activities and dinning options.

Captain’s Tip : Got POG? POG is passion fruit, orange, guava juice. Be sure to go to the local store and sample this nectar of the Gods.
