Rastafarianism is more popularly know as Rasta, gained recognition in Jamaica in the 1930’s The Rastafarian religion is a blend of Christianity and Judaism. Rastafarianism is lead by Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie. The roots of Rasta are based on the teachings of the Jamaican naturalist, Marcus Garvey. Rastafarian leaders encouraged its followers to use the herb ganja. Allegedly ganja had biblical ties as a sacrament and aids meditation. Rastafarianism also set dietary and hygiene laws to accompany its religion's doctrine. Rastafarians also outlawed the combing or cutting of hair. This made dreadlocks an acceptable alternative. The popularity of reggae music gave Rasta a vehicle to spread its message throughout the world.
